How to put people before profits
It may sound strange, but according to Ode’s editor-in-chief Jurriaan Kamp, the problem with today’s global economy is there’s too much focus on money.
No more negative news about the economy here: Kamp sees the potential for positive change if we stop focusing on profits, and start valuing people. A healthy economy is one that serves everyone, he says. In lively prose, Kamp demonstrates new methods of dealing with national income, taxing the use of raw materials rather than income; basing world trade on reciprocity; loaning money without interest; and putting the liability on shareholders and managers for negligence and environmental damage.
Right now, business leaders measure success by the flow of cash, rather than the well-being of the people involved. By making wiser, more compassionate choices that take into account people’s hearts, souls and minds—not just numbers—Kamp says a better world is possible.
