10 tips for happiness

The Editors | November 2005 issue

1. Make mistakes. If you don’t make mistakes, you’re not really doing your best.
2. Do your best.
3. Tell your parents and children at least once a year what you really think.
4. One evening a week unplug everything and turn off the phone. Light candles, drink wine and eat nuts.
5. Buy two hammocks: one for the garden and one for inside your house.
6. Every so often when you’re out walking, put some change in a parking metre that’s nearly empty.
7. Think about how you want to live on in the memories of family and friends. Try to find ways to live up to that image.
8. Let the phone ring a couple of times before answering.
9. Dance in the elevator when you’re alone.
10. Don’t be fanatic about anything.

I just wanted to mention that there has been some good research on the aspects of happiness that we do control. If you are interested in the strategies that have been scientifically proven to increase happiness, check out the research of Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky. She also wrote a book called The How of Happiness. Another easy read that could be helpful to anyone getting caught up in the stress and worry of everyday life is the "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff. . .and it's all Small Stuff Book. I wish you all much happiness in your life!

I want to add to the list, stay home for an entire day. I do that when I can. I plan for it. It's amazing how not being in your car or going some where, and having the entire day to yourself is rejuvenating.

I totally agree with the comment made by "blaber"

Staying at home full day is extremely relaxing, not just for the body, but for the soul too!!

It not just saves me from the noise and pollution of traffic, and the stress of driving... but also gives me a chance to find happiness in the ordinariness of life. The "Simple Abundance" which 'Sarah Breathnach' calls in her book of the same name.

Some days I just love pottering around the house, listening to music in peace, or doing absolutely nothing and "embracing the joyful simplicities"
